Corlann

A new name and identity for the Brothers of Charity Services Ireland, grounded in care, built on respect and centred on the joy of belonging.

The Background

Corlann is one of Ireland’s largest providers of services for people with intellectual disabilities , supporting more than 6,000 people each year across multiple counties. Formerly known as Brothers of Charity Services Ireland, the organisation has a long and established history, built on strong values and deep relationships within the communities it serves.

Following a period of reflection and consultation, the organisation reached an important moment in its journey. Leadership was evolving, but more importantly, so too was the way the organisation saw itself and the people it supports.

The brief was not simply to rebrand. It was to take a step back, to listen carefully and to define what truly matters. What needed to change was how the organisation expressed itself. What needed to remain was everything at its core: dignity, relationships and a deep sense of joy.

The process brought together the voices of the people it supports, alongside staff, families and wider stakeholders. It became clear that the organisation’s strength lies in human connection. A new name and identity needed to reflect that more clearly and more confidently

The Idea

Joyful engagement, respect, and relationships were identified as the organisation’s defining qualities. Rather than positioning itself through services, the organisation would be defined by how it supports people to live their lives, make their own choices, and shape their own future.

The name Corlann emerged from this thinking. Combining cor, the Latin word for heart, and lann, the Irish word for place, it expresses both emotion and belonging. A place of heart. A place of respect. A place where people are supported to be themselves and to grow.

This idea is captured in the tagline, The future is ours to shape. A simple but powerful expression of confidence, ownership and possibility.

The Execution

The identity is designed to feel positive and easy to understand. At its centre is a logo that brings the meaning of the name to life: a location marker formed from concentric shapes, grounded in a heart. It represents both place and people, connection and belonging.

Three simple shapes form the foundation of the visual system: a heart, a smile and a bridge. Together, they express why, how and what the organisation does in a way that is intuitive and human. These elements extend into a flexible icon set and a series of patterns that bring rhythm and warmth to communications.

Colour plays a central role. A bright and uplifting palette reflects the energy and optimism of the organisation, while carefully developed tonal variations ensure high levels of accessibility across all applications. Typography is clear, friendly and highly legible, supporting a tone of voice that is direct, inclusive and easy to engage with.

The result is a brand that feels confident without being imposing, and expressive without losing clarity. It gives the organisation a stronger voice, while staying true to what has always defined it.

Corlann is a name and identity built on care, shaped by relationships and centred on the joy of belonging.

Corlan web 11
Corlann's website needed to do more than introduce a new name and identity. It had to embody the values behind the rebrand, putting the people the organisation supports at the very centre of the experience and making sure everyone could engage with it on their own terms.

One of the central challenges was connecting the national organisation with the services delivered on the ground across its five regions. Working closely with the team, we developed an information architecture that lets the national site set out who Corlann is and what it stands for, while giving each region its own dedicated area to present the specific services available locally. The relationship between the two layers had to feel seamless: a visitor can begin at national level and move confidently into the region relevant to them, or arrive directly into a regional site and still understand how it sits within the wider organisation. Clear, predictable navigation and plain, direct language mean that a person looking for support, a family member, a staff member or a stakeholder can quickly find the services and information that matter to them, wherever their journey begins.

The site was built to meet recognised accessibility standards (WCAG AA 2.1), with careful attention to colour contrast, legible typography, keyboard navigation, clear focus states and content that works with assistive technologies. The bright, uplifting palette and the tonal variations developed during the brand work carry directly into the digital environment, giving us a system that feels warm and energetic while remaining genuinely usable for people with a wide range of needs. Content is written and structured to be easy to read and easy to act on, reinforcing a tone of voice that is inclusive and welcoming throughout.

Design-wise, the website translates the core identity into a calm, confident and human digital space. The heart, smile and bridge motifs, the location-marker logo and the flexible icon set and patterns give the site rhythm and personality, while generous spacing and a clear, friendly typographic system keep everything readable and unhurried. Built on a flexible, easy-to-manage CMS, the platform lets both national and regional teams keep their content current as the organisation grows. The result feels positive and approachable without ever sacrificing clarity. It is a confident expression of what Corlann stands for: a place of heart, shaped by relationships and centred on the people it exists to support.

As Corlann (formerly Brothers of Charity Services), rebranding was a major step for us. The people we support wanted a change—something that would truly reflect the services they receive.Red Dog guided us confidently through every stage of the process, taking the time to really understand intellectual disability support services and to listen to the voices of all our stakeholders. This ensured that everyone felt engaged along the way. We’ve had such positive feedback about our new name and brand, both across our services and in the wider community. It really feels like it represents us.The attention to detail in creating the brand assets has also been excellent. We now have strong, consistent collateral that works across everything—from advertising and signage to online and physical materials.Throughout it all, the Red Dog team have been personable, enthusiastic and very supportive. They made the whole process feel manageable and collaborative, and we’re delighted with the result.
