Building Change

Building Change is a collaborative effort of all six architecture schools in the Republic of Ireland. Together, they are committed to providing education in climate-ready architecture to their students, in doing so addressing the implications of Government policy on climate change and housing.

Background

The programme aims to equip the next generation of architects with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a collaborative and sustainable future through architecture, emphasising design that promotes sustainable building practices and reuse. By working together, they believe they can achieve greater impact and help to drive positive change towards a more sustainable built environment. Building Change represents the discipline of architecture playing its part of a National cross-disciplinary/cross-sector effort to respond to climate change and the housing crisis. Building Change is radically revising education and fundamentally redefining the student learning process – strengthening, building – changing how we teach design to prepare graduates for the future.

The key design considerations were simplicity and clarity, how this identity will sit with identities of 6 universities, the brand’s carbon footprint and accessibility.

The key target audiences are students (current and prospective), academic staff, and management, guidance councillors, professional bodies, architecture practitioners, industry, government/policy, citizen experts/community.

The Idea

The design concept is based on the idea of biomimicry; this is the emulation of the models, systems, and elements of nature to solve complex human problems. 'Biomimicry' is derived from Ancient Greek meaning life and imitation. From this starting point, we looked at voronoi patterns that appear everywhere in nature – including the veins of a leaf, cracked mud, giraffe skin and foamy bubbles. The pattern represents an adaptable, and ever-changing approach that is designed using nature-based systems. These strong, adaptable, resilient structures are frequently adopted in architecture, therefore ultimately we took the voronoi pattern as the inspiration for the brand identity.

A core part of the challenge for the website was creating a website that would not only be sustainable but also something that could be useful for users in communicating the story of building change.

Execution

The logo is an adaptable symbol that changes and reconfigures, just as voronoi patterns do in nature. Similarly, with the logotype, we wanted to visually link the voronoi pattern through bespoke letters – the crossbar on the B, H, A and E have been given slight angles to complement the symbol and allude to the pattern. The relationship between the symbol and the logotype is flexible allowing for ease of application across all touch points.

The colour palette leads with a series of greens; a subtle reference to both kelp and Irishness. It’s a bright, vibrant palette that speaks to sustainability. A system of infinite graphic patterns has been created to add visual interest, brand recognition, house imagery, and house/divide text. A bold text underline known as the highlight device may be used on headlines or to pull out/highlight text, and this subtle nod to the act of learning in an academic setting.

This brand is designed to be digital-first with dynamic animated applications and rollout across website design, digital brand guidelines, presentation and social media templates.

Creating an A-rated sustainable website for Building Change

A core part of the deliverables was a meticulously designed and developed website for Building Change that communicated the project's motivations and intentions while remaining aligned with the sustainability principles that underpin the initiative.

Usability on the site was critical, and through workshops with all key stakeholders, user research and card sorting, we landed on a structure that matched our target users' mental models. We kept the navigation simple, ensuring it is always accessible and users can reach where they need to be within 1/2 clicks/taps. There are spaces for showcasing current work and upcoming events and an overview of the courses on offer within each partner university.

In terms of design, keeping sustainability at the forefront of our minds from the start, our approach centred around cleverly using our colour and graphic patterns via SVG rather than relying too heavily on imagery or video to keep file sizes down while creating interesting visual compositions.

The development approach was just as important. Along with hosting the site with a Green provider, the code had to be kept as light and minimal as possible. This meant leveraging minification techniques and static page caching to reduce server requests to an absolute minimum and achieve an A carbon rating. (source: www.websitecarbon.com)

Working collaboratively with multiple partners we needed a strong creative visual identity to bring coherence to our project. Red Dog worked closely with the team, were attentive to our aims and delivered a brand identity & communications platform that is now integral to Building Change.

St John of God

St John of God is a charitable organisation that provides health, social care and education services for children, adolescents and adults in Ireland and beyond. Partnering with MCCP, our task was to develop a brand for St John of God that tells a story of a modern organisation that’s fit for purpose in a complex and challenging world, and to celebrate the dedication and devotion of St John of God’s people, who make a real and tangible difference supporting thousands of people every day in Ireland.
